The Kindness of Strangers
My wife and her best friend had a recent trip to New York City.
Well, while they were waiting for the ferry from Liberty Island to Ellis Island, a lady in the queue apologised for disturbing their sightseeing.
She explained that she was a primary care doctor and had noticed a mole on our friend's shoulder that caused her some professional concern.
Didn't want to be a buzzkill and ruin the trip, but she really thought the mole needed investigating.
They promised they'd get it checked out when they got home.
Turns out it is cancerous, very lucky to catch it early – treatment available and no spread, so hopefully the outcome will be good.
Our doctors remarked that this is one of the most dangerous places to have a melanoma, as it is really hard to spot. She was very fortunate: left untreated, this would have likely spread and could've been fatal.
Sadly they never got the lady's details,. She was not a New Yorker, just there on vacation with her partner and two children. No obvious regional accent (to my wife's UK ears).
We really wish there was a way to track this angel down.
So if anyone reading this knows a female primary care doctor, Latin American features, who was at the Statue of Liberty around 2.30pm on Friday, June 28th, please give her our enormous thanks and ask her to drop us a line, we owe her a life!
Never underestimate the kindness of strangers. . . even in New York!
