My daily walks in the park give some insight in the parenting skills of the floating bird community. Although hot tarmac is ideal for keeping the youngsters warm (see Caption Challenge), it is not a viable survival strategy if said tarmac turns out to be the main route through a much-frequented park. Staying afloat works better, as soon as the small ones are too big to be swallowed whole by a passing heron. (Seen that happen as well, unfortunately.)
