Dies Irae

17th-Century buildings ablaze - the devastation of the Great Fire of London begins to take hold

Today's service, children, will be short, to give you time to run for safety. First, please turn to hymn number 42, Dies Irae. Pay careful attention to the words. It is from the 13th Century and reads in part:

When therefore the Judge will sit,

whatever lies hidden will appear:

nothing will remain unpunished.

And now the reading of the Scripture:

And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. . .

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. . .

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you. . .

And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, . . and ye shall be his servants.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord
will not hear you in that day.

1 Samuel 8, Authorised Version

Today's Sermon

We refer you to this entry in the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Moral: You may believe you're making meaning, but you may have less time than you think to get it right.

Note the petunia's thought at the end.

Missa ita est

Go in peace.
