Oddity of the Week: Where IS East Jesus?

Where IS East Jesus, anyway?
Art in East Jesus

Everybody has a term to describe a remote location: the boondocks, the back of beyond, Hinterpfuiteufel, North Yorkshire…you get the idea. In the United States, many people say, 'It's way out in East Jesus.'
The East Jesus Art Project is, in fact, way out there. Not only in geographical terms – it's located outside Slab City, in the southern California desert – but in terms of artistic vision. All sorts of found objects, discarded artifacts…okay, trash…are turned into art by the creative folk who live and work there, or merely drop in to add to the imaginative exuberance. Carol M Highsmith (who else?) captured this piece of art for the Library of Congress, and us. We're grateful. It's a fascinating piece. Want to see more? Go here for a glimpse.
