The Maze

It's My Party And I'll Die If I Want To

To the east of the main house, accessed from the Driveway stand the formal gardens. Mostly laid to lawn and terrace, with formal ponds and a small boating lake further away from the house.

In between the large terrace leading from the Drawing Room french windows, and a paved walkway through the arboretum, is an aged yew maze. Popular in many houses of this age, the maze was a diversion, providing a secluded walk, a small puzzle and a trysting meeting place. At the centre of the maze is a central space with a stone bench and a statue of Venus.

The yew hedges are dense and thick, so that it is difficult to hear exactly what people are talking about if you are in a parallel passage, but it is possible to make out a few words and certainly to recognise whose voice is whose.
