"Did you just hear what was on CNN?" Kate asked one of her many close personal friends over the cellular phone. Actually, it was her third closest personal friend on her speeddial, the first two having been abducted by the Goothsbanians soon after she called them.

Kate was now driving in her new volkswagon, heading for the apartment complex she knew her new husband was at. It meant she might accidently bump into her ex-husband but she had to risk it. She wanted to be with her husband before they mysteriously disappeared like everyone else. Hopefully, they'd disappear together.

And with any luck, Jake was already gone.

"Kate! It wasn't just on CNN! It was everywhere! They were broadcasting from my toaster for cryin' out loud!"

"Now Louise! Don't panic on me now! We have to think straight! Did they say we need to pack or will there be time for that?"

"My poor Noodles!" Kate knew immediately Louise was referring to her cat. "I was just holding my little Noodles in my arms and she disappeared right in front of me! No warning! Oh, Kate what are we going to do? Can't the government stop them?"

"Louise! The government can't do anything without six months of debates and you know that!"

"You watch too much CNN, Kate." Louise let out a cry of anguish that felt like it was going to burst Kate's eardrum. "Really this is so uncouth! Just to waltz up to our planet and evict us? What's it all mean!? I've half a notion to call my congressman! I -"

And then a sound of silence that Kate was beginning to get all too used to too soon occurred, and she was listening to a dead line.

Then, directly ahead of her, Kate saw a Yugo empty of a driver skid and spin out of control. She turned her wheel hard right and flew off an embankment. When she hit, she found herself wishing she was the one who had disappeared instead.

She felt a strange churning sensation in the pit of her gut just before her volkswagon exploded into flames.
