The Missing Fan by Magwitch

You arrived at Christmas. You were a joy to behold. You were beautiful. I cherished you. That was 15 years ago and I loved having you around.

This summer you disappeared, I'd lost you. I looked for you everywhere. I visited all the places I knew I'd taken you, I asked in the all the shops and put posters up in their windows and on lamp posts. I contacted local newspapers.

I went further afield – places I knew you hadn't been with me, but I just couldn't be sure. I asked around there as well. No-one had seen you. I was very sad.

Summer turned to autumn and I began to lose hope. The memory of you faded, not completely, it just became fuzzy. I never stopped hoping that one day we would be reunited, and every time the phone rang I hoped it would news of you.

The winter started cold and bleak. Snow in November, turning to ice. The Christmas tree was erected as always on December the first and decorated in its usual fashion. I started to receive the cards and knew I had to write mine. I opened the box that I put all my cards in (usually bought in January in the sales). A photograph fell out. It was you and me on Christmas Day all those years ago.

I sat down and sobbed.

The doorbell rang, I thought it was a sign. It was just the local church people spewing their nonsense. I went back about my business.

Christmas Eve, I'm busy with all my preparations. We will have a festive feast.

The phone rings:

"Hi Mum, can I come home?"

Happy Christmas.
