Margot Asquith to Jean Harlow who had been mispronouncing her name: "No, the 't' is silent, as in 'Harlow'."
A young boy (or girl, depending on which version of the story you believe) was challenged to get the famously terse Calvin Coolidge to say three words. On being told this, Coolidge's reply was "you lose".
