Great article but I have a small quibble.
It would be better, so I'm told, to be guided by the owner's manual about the amount of oil to be put into the engine. Buy the recommended amount and pour it all in at once. After giving it time to settle, note the reading on the dipstick. This will be the optimal reading for future reference, rather than the 'MAX' mark on the dipstick.

Well, there was a fair debate on this in Peer Review.
Given that engines tend to gunk up after a while, they generally start to take less and less oil, until they are stripped down completely. Haven driven bangers for my entire life, I find rule-of-thumb to be far preferable.
