Abi's Community Column
Created | Updated Sep 10, 2002

Welcome to this week's pick of the best things occurring on h2g2. I will
be taking you through Ask h2g2, via some of the
best new Edited Entries and past one or two great
community activities. What more can you ask for1?
Here in the office we are in a flurry as desks are reorganised and we
prepare for an office move. This has resulted in my desk being even more
untidy then usual. This reorganisation has spilled out into my personal
life, where I am frantically dejunking my life. How I have managed to hoard
so much rubbish is beyond me, but I was horrified to find a file of essays
from school. I hope that under the tutelage of my fellow Editors my writing
style has improved.
Ask h2g2
Ask h2g2 is justifiably one of the most popular places on h2g2. Where
else can you tap into the collective knowledge of such a diverse range of
people2? Here are some of the conversations that
have caught my eye over the last few weeks.
I love writing and the creative process in general. There is just one
problem - I find it very hard to look at a blank sheet and come up with
inspirational ideas. Writing this column is no exception. You don't know how
long it took me to type the first key stroke. So I was much heartened to
find out that many of my fellow h2g2 Researchers have exactly the same
problem. If you have problems with Writer's Block this conversation has some
excellent suggestions.
Need to impress someone with the breadth of your knowledge? You could do
worse then checking out the conversation dedicated to Useless Information. Here you can find
out the sort of facts that bring any dinner party to a halt! Fancy a girl in
a bar and not sure how to chat her up? Why not go over and tell her that
koala and human finger prints are so similar they could not be distinguished
at a crime scene. Best not try to impress her by dissolving her pearls in
vinegar though.
Did you get lots of lovely roses for Valentine's Day? If you now
wondering how to keep them then check out the conversation on Keeping my Rose.
Edited Entries
Here are some of the new Edited entries which caught my eye over the last
week.
It is a design classic, known all over the world and worth so much more
then the information it contains. The Life and Times of
the London Underground Map tells you the story of this most peculiar
and reveals that it was orginally rejected by London Underground officials
on the basis that it did not reflect the actual geography of the city. An
excellent entry on a well loved British institution.
Postmenopausal Osteoporosis is a useful entry
for those who want to find out more about this disease. It contains useful
information on preventative measures and there is some good debate in the
attached conversations.
Thinking of expanding your CD collection? If you don't already have it,
you might want invest in Revolver by the
Beatles. The entry is very informative, containing both a background to the
recording of the album and a track listing. Read this and you feel you
understand why the album deserves the place it holds in popular music
history.
I have tried to find a way of describing the entry entitled This Page left Intentionally Blank, but I have failed.
So all I can do is urge you to read a masterly entry that sums up the spirit
of h2g2 neatly.
During my previous career as a grants administrator, the one skill I
could never master was analysing accounts. Had I read this superb entry on
Double Entry Book-keeping, I would have felt
more comfortable with all those figures.
Care in the Community
Here are some of the best fun things to do on h2g2 at the moment:
Do you have an ear for lyrics? If you know your pop music, why not go and
have a go at the Lyric Quiz. It will have you
singing all day long!
Ladies! Are you feeling a little bored? Want more excitement in your
life? The Chaps Club are hosting a Valentine's Dance which is still in full
steam. Just tell them I sent you.
If you have any suggestions for items to be included in this column or to be
featured in Abi's Activities, do let me know.
