Deep in the town of Northampton lies at the top of a hill in the middle of a housing estate a small museum dedicated to the saving of some small insignifcant part of history.

When I say insignificant i mean to say, in the history of the universe a small fenced off museum aint gonna attract much interest is it ??

well you would be so wrong if you thought that.

The musuem is based upon on the old opencast mines that used to search for Ironstone which was then transported to the iron and steel factories that covered the english countryside in the late 18th century and later on till the 1930's when this mine/quarry was closed.

This museum has many diesel locomotives that once upon a time were oiled daily, lovingly cleaned by their fitters and then thrashed to death by the drivers who wanted to drive on the Mainline and couldnt so took out their veagenance on these small and some consider very important locomotives. they do periodically get their locomotives out and provide train rides on special occasions on their mile or so of demonstration line.

However there are some small gems in this museum that are quite quite unique, that is if u are a train, wagon or locomotive train spotter or even just a person curious to see what the Big red Building in the middle of a field contains.

These gems include a 422 BIG buffet, several rusty & Hornsby locomotives,a Hudswell bombproof oil terminal loco, a couple of John Fowlers, a plethrora of rusty and unusable steam loco hulks, some interesting wagons some of which have had a Mainline career, some stayed within the confines of the depot or quarry they worked.
Added to this there is a plethora of coaches that have come from what the author understands to be Electric multiple Units, these units are known as CEPS, DD, EPB & DMU. all are very important as they have in their time carried several million people to & from work for money or they took families to the seaside for that annual nervous breakdown known as the Holiday.

That aside the Musuem also caters for people with special needs and these people who keep the musuem open and enable it to survive daily are the cream of the Trusts members, this Group on the railway are one of the most friendly workteams that in the author's opinion represent the very best in working museums and railways.

At the weekend working members who also appear during the week are welcoming, very knowledgeable and will do their best to make you welcome.

Yearly membership for an Adult is £10 a year, children £5 a year, senior citizens £7.50 a year and life membership from £250.
