Singapore will set up a new academy aimed at increasing the island's expertise and understanding of environmental protection, the government said on January 5th 2002.

Speaking on the opening day of the inter-regional preparatory meeting for the World Summit on Sustainable Development late this year, Environment Minister Lim Swee Say said the academy would work with other countries to protect the environment.

"We are not working alone in our quest for environmental sustainability," he told the 120 delegates from the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

"There is certainly much scope for small island developing states to work together, overcome our resource constraint, and speed up the pace of capacity building through international cooperation and regional collaboration," Lim said.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development will be held in South Africa in August.
