Science, it is a Mad thing.

Science is Mad?

You may be wondering what this is all about, Calling science mad and all, but the fact is when you look at it there are many things in science (our window to the big all of everything)
that are either enough to drive you mad through complexities or sheer scale, or alternativly make no sense what so ever and seem like the ravings of a lunatic.

The fact is no matter how strange a book may be the only way it can safely be the strangest yet useable book published is if the book is a science text

So what's the problem?

Most of this is blamed on 4 main areas,

  • The Immutable Laws which arnt so immutable
  • Quantum Mechanics which 5/10 physicists still dont quite understand fully
  • Whatever rules it all works by doing things in the dumbest way possible
  • Complications from explaining the most confusing and utterly useless things to people who havnt done torturous courses to be able to understand the info that is of no use to them and subsequently getting many things confused.

Is this meant to be a joke?

Now at this moment this is probably sounding like a Monty Python sketch or a part of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Yes its true the style is reminiscent but the facts are solid its just that the way things actually are read on and you will see

Take this Example,

Mass and Weight.

Every object has a mass, its the amount of 'stuff' a thing is made of and never changes it is measured in kilograms, Mass dosnt care about gravity as its the measure of protons, neutrons and electrons and the amount of matter they are made of.

So to define Mass

In this a kilogram of sugar is a kilogram of sugar, on Earth, the Moon, Mars or even deep space.
Sound simple?

Weight, this is on the other hand the 'force' an object pushes down with while on the surface of the earth, if you 'use' enough energy to match the weight of an object you lift it,
Scientists measure this in things called Newtons, which is a measure of force about what you need to do to accelerate an object.

Because of the surface gravity of the earth, the weight of an object is 10 X mass, Newtons so a 1Kg bag of sugar has a weight of 10Newtons.

But hang on a minute, your saying we say everything weighs so many kilograms, whats all this newtons rubbish?

This stems from the fact we call it Weight but use Mass, now thats okay because as long as the people who need to do important work with these facts (scientists) know the difference and can sort the mess out, noone else need care yet.

However once we eventually colonise space there is going to be hell to pay because your 1Kg bag of sugar is still 1Kg on the moon but it will only weigh(in scales and hands) 0.15Kg and so on for the rest of the solar system.
This will probably cause alot of confusion with everyone spending ages trying to work out what you mean by what and people getting the worng end of the stick the instant you try talking to someone not on the same celestial body as yourself.

If you think its a tiny problem to accidentaly use Inches and Pounds instead of Centimeters and Kilograms,

Just Wait.

And its in Biology too

It isnt just physics that dosnt make sense all Science is full of the strange, silly and stupid.
For instance the Human eye has a blind spot a small area which each eye cannot see, and if you get a piece of card with some marks on it and do some funny tricks, moving it closer with one eye shut sort of thing you can see the effect when another mark disapears or some such.

The reason is simple yet silly, it turns out the back of the eye has one really vital bit to this problem, the retina a wall of cells that grab incoming light turn it to signals which the brain makes into images, sounds simple, like any cells these need oxygen and nutrients from the blood stream.

All well and good so far, but when the eye devloped for some reason it formed backwards with the blood vessels on the inside of the eye over the retina, now these are thin enough not to block the light and make the eye useless, but they need to be supplied and connected up to the rest of your veins and arteries sothey have a point in each eye where they go through the retina to connect up, by going through there must be a hole.
And you have now guessed why we have a blind spot. Now if Squid had been our ancient ancestors that evolved along to us we would have got a fully functioning no blind spot eye, as they and some other species have eyes that formed the right way around.

(Of course if squid had evolved into us we would also have 10 limbs not 4 but that would probably be useful in its own way)

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
