If you're not in a hurry, just get on the first tube. It'll get you there eventually, woithout having to worry about which direction you're going. (Just a big circle, after all.)
Also, if you want to go towards Temple, etc, (whichever way that is) it's often quicker to get on the first district line tube, get off at Aldgate East, change platforms and get on the next train back.
