the national trust thread made me think of english heritage - an organisation primarily famous for looking after stonehenge and hadrian's wall, but it has many many other properties around the country. my favourite is an atypical eh property, in that it was built (part of it at least) within the last couple of hundred years. i'm talking about belsay hall, castle and gardens, near morpeth in northumberland. it's got so much: a wonderfully atmospheric ruined castle, an adventure playground of a quarry garden which contrasts beautifully with the formal gardens, and the hall. this was built in the 1800s, using the stone from their quarry (hence the quarry garden...). from the outside it looks like a greek temple, inside it is completely bare, a perfect palette to let your imagination run riot. and it only costs £3.90 to get in! bargain!! of all the eh and nt places i've been to, this one holds a special place in my family's heart. it has something for everyone.
