A Conversation for Preparing for Your First Day at University

An interesting thing to try...

The first time I was at University I was a scared 17 year old in 'the big city' for the first time, so I couldn't give you any good advice from that time of my life.

The second time I was at Uni I was 10 years older and oculd look at the whole thing through very different eyes, but not as different as a soon-to-be friend of mine.

We had a small tutorial group - about 25 or so - and on the first day we had the customary routine of introducing ourselves to the rest of the group and saying a little bit about ourselves.

3 years later, at the end of the course this friend of mine pulls out the notes he took on that first day. It seems that he wrote a few notes on each person that first day - first impressions, the details that they gave etc. With some he also included how he thought each of them would progress with the course. Some turned out to be true, some wildly innacurate, but all of them interesting and amusing.

It proved to be a most fascinating exercise and something that I recommend most people do, especially if you know you are going to be with the people in your Uni group for quite some time. smiley - smiley
