Gravity and Quotidian Life
One doesn't have to be a genius to note that things fall towards the ground
But to discover that falling things accellerate,
Is wot Galileo Found

Dr Hell Posted Mar 28, 2003
...not only things that fall accelerate. Not everything under the influence of gravity must accelerate - well, at least not uniformly - think of geostationary satelites. Acceleration is an effect of gravity, not gravity itself. Nice observation of Galileo, but it doesn't say much about the nature of gravity. It's the falling to the ground bit that is important - be it accelerated or not. In other words: Gravity is that weird property, where stuff attracts just because it's made of matter.

hmmm, actually, satellites *are* being accelerated. Their speed vector changes (not necessarily its value but its direction) and that's acceleration too

Dr Hell Posted Mar 30, 2003
Monsigniore: OK good point, but what if a satellite is kept right between two planets? gravity: YES, acceleration: NO
OK, OK...

Oh no, it's OK I had changed my nick to Elvis (I do that from time to time, basically with the aim of confusing people) I am otherwise known here as HELL (Hellvis is the last step of the metamorphosis - after a week I'll be back as Hell again)
About your link: Funny coincidence.
Another thing: I don't know if you're new here, but writing in CAPITALS is normally taken as shouting, and is somewhat unpolite. (I personally don't care, but there are people in here who do.)

charityplayer, I'm sorry I don't get your point. Could you be please more elaborate on what the problem is?
"but what if a satellite is kept right between two planets? gravity: YES, acceleration: NO" - you're talking about Lagrange Points (A947333) which are verrrrrry special cases

DID YOU KNOW
MACARONI = A DANDY
THE WORD IS DERIVED FROM THE MACARONI CLUB, INSTITUTED BY A SET OF FLASHY MEN WHO HAD TRAVELLED IN ITALY, AND INTRODUCED ITALIAN MACARONI AT ALMACKS' SUBSCRIPTION TABLE. THE MACARONIES WERE THE MOST EXQUISITE FOPS THAT EVER DISGRACED THE NAME OF MAN; VICIOUS, INSOLENT, FOND OF GAMBLING, DRINKING AND DUELLING, THEY WERE (circa 1773) THE CURSE OF VAUXHALL GARDENS.
WE ARE INDEBTED TO THE MACARONIES FOR ONLY TWO THINGS: THE ONE IS THE INTRODUCTION OF THAT EXCELLENT DISH, MACARONI, AND THE OTHER IS THE INVENTION OF THAT USEFUL SLANG WORD - BORE - WHICH ORIGINALLY MEANT, ANY OPPONENT OF DANDYISM.

ER, SOMEHOW THIS SOUNDS BEWILDERING IN MY EARS...

Dr Hell Posted Apr 3, 2003
Yo... Interesting stuff! I don't see why this is in Gravity, though. Did you know the American anthem (Star Spangled Banner) was composed to the melody of a drinking song for the anachreontic society - a drinking club where fashionable men of their time met to get drunk and read obscene poetry?

I WRITE
I began with No Subject, No Problem and an Observation REGARDING GALILEO.

"but what if a satellite is kept right between two planets? gravity: YES, acceleration: NO" - you're talking about Lagrange Points (A947333) which are verrrrrry special cases**
**THIS REFERS TO POST 5 FROM Hellvis.
I WRITE WITH CAPS FOR VISUAL CLARITY AND SIMPLICITY, SO THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANYBODYS' EARS TO BE AFFECTED.
IS THERE ANY SUCH DISH AS MACARONI PIZZA
