Moot Point

Sheep in wolfs clothing

My favourite one is moot point. Moot comes from the moot courts in the middle ages where cases were resolved by talking about them. Most people now seem to use the phrase 'mute point' which is the exact opposite of the original's meaning.

The verb "to moot" - to suggest something, or discuss the merits of a suggestion - is still current, but not that common. In fact I hardly ever hear it used outside of Ireland, where it still pops up from time to time.
