A Conversation for Mexico's Drinking Water

Drinking water is safe (other water may be not)

The public water system in Mexican cities cleans and sterilises the water like in most places, and this is safe to drink. However, for example in Monterrey, the water is not always pumped 24hrs a day by the city to conserve the resource.

This means that the water supply to most houses is stored in tanks. As the water sits there it is not advisable to drink tap water, unless you do have a good resistance to certain bacteria.

This is why it is very common to see bottled water being supplied and drunk in Mexican houses and restaurants. What people call drinking water is usually bottled or purified by an antibacterial filtration system.

Otherwise boil it.

In the country, in places without a water treatment system you are crazy to drink the water.

You should always wash vegetables. Anywhere not just in Mexico. In the USA for example, you will need to wash off nasty chemicals from your food. In Mexico often recycled or "black" water is used to irrigate crops - So you might be eating something nasty if you don't wash your lettuce.

Almost everywhere I have been in the USA the tap water tastes and smells like public swimming pools - I presume from an incredible amount of chemical additives. I have noticed it is also yellow or greenish when poured in the bathtub to fill it. It is undrinkable.

The tap water here in Canada is drinkable, as is everywhere I have been in Europe.

Don't forget Walkerton, Ontario, where seven people died from drinking the E. coli contaminated water.

Nobody Particular

I have had "tap" water in Mexico a while ago. I do not know if they have changed it since it is a rather poor town. It really did make me ill though!
