This is a beautyful entry and, as a jewish non-religious woman, I have learned a thing or two. I must add 2 comments, though:
1. 2 years ago my brother had his Bar-Mitzva service next to the western wall, which was, at the time, possible to get to. Last year, my father, who lives in Jerusalem, and I, took a saturday walk in the Old city of Jerusalem - meaning - within the walls. So when things are calmer, Jews can actually visit in the Temple Mount.
2. The priests you've mentioned were called Cohanim (a Cohen means the holder of an office), and unlike priests, were incharge of the whole people of Israel, not of communities. There are still many families who bare this name and similar names, probably the offsprings of the original Cohanim.
