A Conversation for How a Pump Works
Pumps and Purposes

Very good overview, this entry!
I have two or three additional items for you:
1) Membrane pumps - something intermidiate between piston pumps, bicycle pumps and peristaltic ones.
2) Pumps are also used to create and maintain vacuum.
3) Cavitation: Although you may have intended to say so with the second footnote, pressure decreases when accelerating fluids. This is the principle that makes aeroplanes fly (accelerated speed on top of the wings = low pressure / the other way round below ==> resulting in a force in upward direction).
