Summer 2000: Holiday in Tunisia, near Monastir. Wonderful country, arab culture...

Visited Kairouan, 4th place in the islamic sacred charts (1st place: Mekka, 2ns place: Medina, 3rd place: Jerusalem.

Also visited Tunis and Carthago. Nothing left of the punic (Hannibal´s) Carthago, but still some rather interesting roman ruins. On the left, the president´s palace, really disgusting... At the front soldiers in a livree, on the back of the building other soldier in combat suit, cameras everywhere, it´s strictly forbidden to take any pictures into the palace´s direction.

A trip to the deserts left mixed emotions. Terrific landscape, the sand desert (Sahara), the Atlas mountains, the salt desert, where the salt builds forms reminding of the Polar Sea. The other side is the poverty of the people living in the desert. They have hardly any profits of the money the tourists leave...
