These two pictures show the same white rhino, a resident of the Pietersburg Nature Reserve. White rhinos, Ceratotherium simum, are the largest kind of rhino, and can weigh up to 5 000 lbs. Their total length can exceed 13 ft and their shoulder height can be over 6 1/2 ft.

White rhinos are grazers. Their heads are very big and long, and they carry them low, close to the ground. Their mouths are broad and their lips squared off. A white rhino is somewhat like a giant lawnmower. When they graze and you are close enough, you can easily hear the crunching and grinding as they chomp up the tough grass stems. White rhinos prefer open, grassy areas. This makes them rather easy to photograph. This particular one was photographed on the bottom of a dried-up dam; he was quite close to me at the time, I was standing outside of the car and the only thing between us was a low dam wall.
