When I lived there some years ago I was under the impression that Krungthep is used regularly by the locals. It was certainly written as such in Thai on signposts, although they put 'Bangkok' in English, (not that I speak the language very well, but I did make an attempt to learn to read it - and gave up after the first couple of chapters. Maybe I'll write something about the language another time). Meanwhile, I used to get a great reaction on the bus if I said 'Krungthep' instead of 'Bangkok' when paying my fare.
