The reason I've always heard was that it all comes from falconry . .
You carry your falcon on you're left hand. Falsons dont like people/things walking behind them, so to avoid problems, falconers have to walk/ride to the left of anyone coming towards them.
The reason the rest of europe drive on the right is that Napoleon wanted to do everything as differently from the british as possible!
