Dodi Asantekrom - a step towards paradise
Created | Updated Aug 16, 2005
Today, Dodi is a peaceful location and home to eco-tourism and the sustainable development promoted by Crystal Lake Fish Farm. However, the area has not always been so peaceful. Dodi was once an important centre in the infamous slave trade, where unfortunate captives were gathered before the terrible journey down to the coast. This trade was outlawed by Britain in 1837 and the British Navy enforced this ban by pursuing any traders found off the coast of Ghana. (There is a dramatic model of such an encounter in the museum at the naval dockyard in Portsmouth, England).
Today, Dodi is in many ways the face of a new Ghana, demonstrating how the natural resources of the country can be linked to sustainable development and managed for the benefit of the community. It has not been an easy journey and there are still many challenges to overcome, particularly in developing better healthcare, housing and education. However, for those who want to learn, this is a very special location. Visitors are most welcome.
