Using a fork and knife in the United States involves more faffing around than in Britain or Europe. Generally, the idea is to cut with your preferred hand, set the knife down and swap the fork into your preferred before eating whatever you have just cut. Emily Post (US etiquette guru) refers to this as the 'zig-zag' method.
You should also try to keep your elbows tucked in while eating. Failure to do so might give others at the table the impression that you're trying to do the chicken dance
