Is it Ai though?

If it doesn't learn it is just an algorithm, no sign of AI. Moreover if it is just an algorithm, does it matter if it steps on a mine? We got lots more algorithms sat on the hard-disk just waiting to be used.

Ah, well, Godel-Escher-Bach states that AI is very often considered to be 'whatever hasn't been done yet'. As soon as someone figures out how to get a computer to do it, it stops seeming intelligent...
Computer chess is a good example of this... one hundred years ago, a machine that could play chess would have to be considered intelligent. These days, a computer can do it...
In a sense, then, this isn't AI. But getting a computer to solve *any* problem has relevance to the way people and machines think about things, so it's worth looking at.
Incidentally, my last paragraph was a rather hasty guess. See the thread 'Performance' for some actual details of how well this algorithm works.
