A Conversation for Creating an Artificial Intelligence to play Minesweeper

Is it Ai though?

If it doesn't learn it is just an algorithm, no sign of AI. Moreover if it is just an algorithm, does it matter if it steps on a mine? We got lots more algorithms sat on the hard-disk just waiting to be used.

Ah, well, Godel-Escher-Bach states that AI is very often considered to be 'whatever hasn't been done yet'. As soon as someone figures out how to get a computer to do it, it stops seeming intelligent...

Computer chess is a good example of this... one hundred years ago, a machine that could play chess would have to be considered intelligent. These days, a computer can do it...

In a sense, then, this isn't AI. But getting a computer to solve *any* problem has relevance to the way people and machines think about things, so it's worth looking at.

Incidentally, my last paragraph was a rather hasty guess. See the thread 'Performance' for some actual details of how well this algorithm works.
