I have heard interpretations of the Book of Phillip that implied Laz and Jesus were lovers. And that this, being contrary to public order which always is easier when family units are strong, was behind the Book of Phillip ending on the cutting room floor. It would not be all that hard to imagine that both Mary and Laz were well loved (ahem!) since many highly charismatic figures seem to be more into the 'Act' than into whom it is with. One 'religious leader' that was highly charismatic (like him or no) who sampled both sides of the road was the infamous Jim Jones of the Guyana Kool-Aid Massacre. Before his final act, he was highly regarded by some and by all accounts extremely compelling in person. And he definitely shepherded his flock of both sexes in ways that fall some distance from current church teachings on fornication.
