why lighthouses are round? Is it because they usually couldn't be all that large (lack of space) but needed the spiral stairs for going up to the top? Yet, I guess they could have had spiral staircases in rectangular lighthouses, too.
Lovely entry, thanks.

Lighthouses are round because it is the strongest shape for load bearing and provides the least resistance to random wave and wind action, also they tended to need a small footprint.

Oh, I see. I've never given it any thought before reading the bit about the man going mad because the lack of corners.

Sorry, I don't know this phrase. In German, we have 'Die Kurve kratzen', which means something like 'running away very rapidly' - is it the same meaning like 'going round the bend'?

It could be - other idioms would be 'driving him crazy'-'going nuts or bonker of gaga'- 'going round the twist'- 'going do lally' and lots more.

No, it's a completely different meaning then from the phrase I posted. It's more like our 'durchdrehen' then.

I would have no idea, not speaking German and only knowing one extremely rude phrase. I think you have got the idea though. Idioms are always difficult because they are like a code.

Yes, I got the idea - and we use 'being gaga' here, too.
And I'm fascinated, you say you don't speak German except for one extremely rude phrase (you're not the only one, though) - and I speak English and don't think I know any extremely rude phrases in English.

Your English seems pretty good to me. All you would need to do is translate a German rude expression into English and it should work. I'm assuming you know some rude phrases in German.

Certainly will, it might even be lighthouse related - we will see. Thanks for the good wishes.

Well, you could maybe write an entry about why lighthouses are round. I find that really fascinating.
