I know this hasn't anything to do with chickens, anymore than road crossing has to do with which came first, the chicken or the egg, but it is relevant road crossing.
Wild-life observation in a region where ground squirrels were prolific:
After several months of driving in this area, I noticed that the squirrels could be differentiated into several classes, those that fled in panic away from the road when a vehicle approached, those who fled in panic across the road, in the path of oncoming vehicles, those who stood stock still, watching the vehicle as it passed, not moving unless the vehicle stopped. The ones that fled across the road contributed to the to road kills (along with two kinds of black tarantulas (one hairy and one smooth), the occasional hare and the occasional coyote).
Some of the squirrels that fled across the road were run over only on the tail, occasionally one would see them beside the road, curled up, cradling their injured member. After several days, the injured section of the tail would wither and fall off, giving rise to a population of 'lop-tails'. The lop-tails did not learn from experience, but continued fleeing across the road in the path of oncoming vehicles.
