I think what this is referring to is the fact that his works are often banned in US schools for one reason or another (often because of the constant use of the 'N-word').
Nothing like burying one's head in the sand and pretending history never happenned.

Considering his vast body of work, and his fame and importance in American literature, I am greatly disturbed by the fact that all I studied of him in school is the short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," which was his first successful story and launched his career.
If you want to know more about Twain, you know where to find me. I've read the majority of his work... and besides, you need all the homework help you can get.
