Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy

I'm sorry - Perhaps I'm a little dense (or a little bit too drunk), but wasn't Adams poking fun at science fiction and man's attempt to see the unknown when he penned his Hitchhikers series? Wasn't his "Guide" a bit of satire and sarcasm? Wasn't he saying, in essence, that it is futile to plan ahead, to safeguard against the unexpected? Wasn't he saying that we, homo sapien sapiens, are insignificant pieces of matter?

Why are we penning a new "Guide"? Why is Adams all for it???????
