TBWP - Roster of the Witch
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
Roll Call! Sound Off!
This is a list of many of the characters in the Blair Witch Mythology, developed by Haxan Films. As I studied the movie, the Scifi tv special, the book dossier, the BlairWitch.Com website, and even the CD-Rom, I realized a scorecard was in order. This tale transcends over two centuries of time, and includes many people.
I have not included Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, or Michael Williams to the list below for what I thought were obvious reasons. Watch the movie. The characters below are the supporting roles in the various forms that this tale appears in. To get the entire story you have to look at all of it. Watching the movie alone only gives you part of the story. By reviewing the information below, coupled with all the stuff that's out there, you should be able to more accurately see the scope of this epic tale of modern myth.
Watching the movie alone is like a housefly looking down at the floor he just landed on and thinking that's all there is to life. Experiencing all the information about this film is like the housefly buzzing into the air and looking down to see the whole room.

C.D. ‘Buck’ Buchanan
Private investigator. Hired by Angela Donahue in
January of 1996 to pick up where the police left off.
Angela hired Buck at the request of her father-in-law
Randy. Randy and Buck are old friends who have known
each other since 1982. Buck and his associates
followed up on many leads but only found more dead
ends and more questions. He ceased his investigation
in May of 1996, after a mysterious experience in the
remains of Rustin Parr’s homestead. Son of Ed Buchanan
Sr who ran the Buchanan Agency and bequeathed it to
his son. Buck has been involved in full-time law
enforcement and investigation for thirty-two years.
Graduate of FBI Academy in 1980.
Sheriff Ron Craven
Sheriff of Burkittsville and leader of initial search
for the missing students in October and Novemer of
1994. Was actively involved in the investigation until
February 8th 1996 when he stubbornly concluded the
footage had been faked. Agreed initially to full
disclosure with the Buchanan Agency, after Buck pulled
a string or two at the Maryland State Senate. Craven’s
primary motivation for his actions is to keep his
small town as peaceful as possible. This scandal
threatened to ruin the fabric of the status quo.
Craven is a conservative man who is slow to change.
Since the investigation began he has been under
scrutiny and criticism due to a lack of progress. He
steadfastly insists, considering the facts available
and the resources at his disposal, he did the best
possible job.
Diane Ahlquist
Third generation psychic from Florida. Brought on the
case at Angela Donahue’s request in the spring of 96.
Last known whereabouts: Florida.
Angela Donahue
Mother of the missing Heather Donahue. Buck’s client
in the first half of 1996. Though not wealthy, she has
invested her life savings into uncovering the truth
about her daughter.
D. A. Stern
Occult investigator of twenty years and compiler of
public dossier. Last known whereabouts: Las Vegas
[sidenote: this is a real author of TBWP Dossier, in
stores now.]
Dr. Michael DeCoto
Professor at Montgomery College teaching Filmmaking.
Contacted Sanchez, Myrick and Hale in 1997 to help
Angela Donahue amass the footage for public
consumption. Heather and Joshua were students of his.
Randy Donahue
Angela’s father-in-law, who encouraged her to hire his
old friend Buck Buchanan. Randy has fond memories of
his daughter-in-law Heather dating back to her
infancy. When he was a child, Randy once encountered
the Blair Witch, and she spoke his last name.
Jennifer Colton
Associate for Buchanan’s Private Investigator Agency.
Hired by Buck in August 1995. Former member of the
Baltimore Police Department. Was demonstrative in
seeking interviews and accumulating data for Buck
during the investigation.
Carlos Sonenberg
Associate for Buchanan’s Private Investigator Agency.
Was demonstrative in seeking interviews and
accumulating data for Buck during the investigation.
On January 18th 1996, visited the site where the
footage was discovered, but in his opinion it was too
snowed over and too much time had passed for there to
be of any further use for it. Expert at data
processing systems with ten years law enforcement
experience including two years as Chief Deputy FBI
special archives section.
Stephen Wately
Associate for Buchanan’s Private Investigator Agency.
Former New York cop. Is an investigator for hire in
both the U.S. and abroad. Awarded NYC Dept. Medal of
Valor three times.
Frank Lauriat
Brought onto case by Buchanan January 19th 1996.
Retired FBI Agent and longtime friend of Buck’s.
Analyzed footage and associated evidence under
supervision of Sheriff Cravens and Buchanan. It was
partially due to Lariat’s findings that Cravens came
to his conclusion that it was all a hoax. Lauriat
warned Buchanan early on that the answers to this
conundrum may lie at the site where the footage was
found, but that it might be too dangerous a risk.
Lauriat is private about his opinions, but is perhaps
a bit more of a ‘believer’ in the supernatural than
some.
Deputy Leonard Callihan
Deputy with Burkittsville Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies Hart and Gooding
Burkittsville’s other full-time policemen, serving
under Craven.
Dr. David Mercer
Professor and Instructor of Anthropology at Montgomery
College; supervised the dig in the Black Hills Forest
where the backpack and footage were discovered in the
basement of what was once a colonial house. He turned
the evidence over to the police, who responded by
immediately ordering a cease of further digging on the
site. Mercer has all but staked his reputation on the
following fact: the brick wall behind which the
backpack lay was over a century old. It is difficult
to concieve that the backpack was placed there after
1994 without disturbing the brick wall and surrounding
earth. However, in interviews it is unclear whether or
not he was actually there at the site when the brick
wall was removed by student Peter Gould revealing the
backpack behind it.
Peter Gould
Student of Professor Mercer’s Anthropology class in
1995 in his senior year. He was the one who actually
uncovered the backpack and footage which was hidden
behind a century old brick wall in the basement of the
foundation of an old colonial house in the woods.
Gould broke the wall while excavating, during a class
expedition dig. Gould was one of the students who
camped out in the woods near the dig the night before.
He was already digging when Mercer and the other half
of the class arrived from a nearby hotel. Reports that
Gould could have planted the evidence himself are
inconclusive.
Andrea Kay Lynn
Student of Professor Mercer’s Anthropology class in
1995 in her junior year. She admitted to being with
Gould in the basement of an old colonial house in the
woods during a routine class dig. She was helping
Gould in the excavation process and witnessed Gould
discovering the backpack. Soon after this event,
Andrea left for Europe. When she returned, she chose
to complete her schooling at the University of
Maryland instead of Montgomery College. Andrea was one
of the students who camped onsite overnight while the
other half of the class and Dr. Mercer stayed at a
nearby hotel.
Tony Flore
Student of Professor Mercer’s Anthropology class in
1995 in his junior year. He was helping Gould in the
excavatio process in the basemetn of an old colonial
house in the woods during a routine class dig. Tony
was one of the students who camped onsite overnight
while the other half of the class and Dr. Mercer
stayed at a nearby hotel.
Scott Darlington
Student of Professor Mercer’s Anthropology class in
1995 in his junior year. He was helping Gould in the
excavatio process in the basemetn of an old colonial
house in the woods during a routine class dig. Tony
was one of the students who camped onsite overnight
while the other half of the class and Dr. Mercer
stayed at a nearby hotel.
Lelia Whickham – Kelly
Staff reporter for Frederick Post, a local
Burkittesville newspaper. She wrote the initial
article published in 1995 November 13th that announced
discovery of the footage.
Marilyn Slade
Spokesperson for joint taskforce during the 95
investigation. Perhaps liason between FBI and local
authorities.
Bill Barnes
Elderly head of Burkittesville Historical Society.
Great storyteller. Friend of Sheriff Cravens. Had
access to the book “The Blair Witch Cult” until the
Maryland Historical Society went over his head and
demanded it be kept in their research library under
lock and key. Barnes is a conservative, no nonsense
guy. He seems Santa Claus mushy on the outside, but
has a rough and conservative exterior. He loves his
hometown with a passion that shows in his knowledge
and lore of its history, and has made it come alive
for the people of this town and those who visit it for
many years. He is not inclined to change, and though
welcomes outsiders he does so hesitantly, with an
almost unconsious guard up at all times.
Lucan Johnson
Warlock and narrator of brief-lived television series
Mystic Occurrences which played on local Maryland
television in the 1970s. In one of his episodes he
spoke at length about the Blair Witch Cult, and
attempted to replace the fictitious tall tales of
legend with common sense and fact, from his own Wiccan
perspective. Johnson gives a sound and reasonable
argument that much of the Witch Trials in colonial
america stems from misunderstanding, fear, and
intolerance of differing belief systems, coupled with
a number of extraneous factors like hallucinogenic
properties in the grain which spoiled the food and
herbal medicine being misunderstood for evil
witchcraft. It is unknown whether Johnson has himself
ever set foot in Burkittsville. His current
whereabouts are unknown.
Elizabeth Richardson
Sometime soon after 1824, the house where the backpack
was found was first constructed. Richardson was the
earliest recorded owner, who gave the property to the
state just before her death, under questionable
circumstances. With a single document, Richardson’s
heirs were denied ownership of the house and property.
The original name of the property was Rokone Lot.
Leslie Stanton
The man who drew up the paperwork that took Rakone Lot
out of the hands of Richardson’s heirs and into the
hands of the state. This document was not signed by
Richardson. It was eyewitnessed by Jeremiah Rider and
Nahum Eager.
Bill Combs
One of the hundred plus volunteers who searched the
Black Hills Woods for Heather, Josh and Mike in
October and November of 1994.
Emily McKenna
One of the hundred plus volunteers who searched the
Black Hills Woods for Heather, Josh and Mike in
October and November of 1994. She insisted they
“weren’t lookin in the right place.” She was only with
the volunteers for two nights. Cravens specifically
told her that her services were no longer required
when she began to insist repeatedly they search the
old house in the woods.
Mary Brown
Burkittesville native who lives alone in a mobile home
trailer park. Most locals find her eccentric and
reclusive; some even call her crazy. She has elaborate
stories that sound impossible but she relates them in
a way that insures to you, in her mind anyway, she
speaks the truth. She was one of three people to last
see the three film students alive, and claims to have
seen an apparition of Joshua on December 23rd 1994.
Bleeding. In pain. Teeth ripped out and holding his
side.
Bob Griffin
Burkittesville native: one of the last three to see
the three film students alive. He was fishing with his
son-in-law Ed Swanson up Tappy East Creek. Calls Ed a
“beanpole.”
Clark Wissler
President of Montgomery College in Rockville Maryland.
Rachel Meyer
Heather’s best friend. Originally born in New Orleans.
Was intern at the local paper when Heather
disappeared.
Theresa Burkhart
A friend of Heather’s. Was originally supposed to be
the sound person, but she took ill a couple days
before they were scheduled to leave, so Joshua
suggested Mike to Heather and she agreed.
Kathy Seaton
A friend of Heather’s. One of “the three Kathys” known
in the school as popular. It is not known if Heather
was friends with all three of them or just Seaton.
“Gregg” and “John”
Men mentioned in relation to Heather. John was her
roommate which she was upset with just before her
disappearance. Whether or not they were physically
intimate is unclear. John may have just been there to
pay half the rent. Gregg was a boyfriend/lover who she
mentioned fondly in her journal, in one of the final
entries. Whether she was still seeing Gregg at the
time of her disappearance is unknown. No one else
mentions him in the interviews. He may have been a
love from years ago, or a recent affair. I also recall
reading about a “Chad” somewhere, but can’t find the
reference.
Peter Stanton
A steady boyfriend of Heather’s during senior prom.
They broke up when he moved away to U of Mass.
Bud DiGrassi Jr.
Son of a man Heather’s father prosecuted for murder.
Swore to kill everyone who helped put his father in
jail. Two of his targets are murdered before the
police catch him assaulting Brigitte Thauheimer.
However, in October of 1994, he was in Italy with his
mom. His passport was his alibi.
Steve Sawyer
Friend of Joshua’s. Co-worker at record store where
Josh worked part time. Confirmed that Josh smoked
weed. Josh did not tell many people that he worked at
the record store.
Summer and Jacob Leonard
Joshua’s parents. Jacob was reluctant to assist or
respond to anyone regarding their loss, preferring to
be reclusive and in denial about it. Summer was a
friend of Angela’s, and occasionally helped Buchanan’s
Agency behind her husband’s back. Jacob is an
insurance agent for Global Mark.
Lisa Toller
Joshua’s live in relationship. They broke up the week
of the disappearance. She’s very self-involved and
closed-minded. If she felt a loss for Joshua, she kept
it to herself, had a good cry alone, and then put on
an air of indifference which appears to be how she
approaches everything in life. Lisa was jealous of
Heather, and believed Mike drank too much beer.
Colonel Nathan and wife Virginia Blair
Married couple who founded Blair in the early 1600s,
for which Blair Maryland was named. When they left
England, Virginia was a shy, aloof and reclusive girl.
Soon after arriving in the New World, Virginia’s
personality began to change. She became fascinated
with the flora and herbs of the area, and took to
making a very tasty and stomach soothing tea which her
husband liked very much. Within a year, Nathan died of
an illness. After he died, Virginia took over, and is
a rare example of feminine power in colonial america.
Kyle Brody
The kid who escaped Rustin Parr and testified that
Parr murdered seven children in cold blood. He told
Kyle to stand in the corner with his face against the
wall. Kyle was later institutionalized for
psychological trauma which reached a psychotic peak
soon after he reached puberty. He died in the
institution in 1971.
Eileene Treacle
A small lass who fell into Tappy East Creek and
drowned in 1825. Several eyewitnesses swore they saw a
white hand reach up out of the very shallow creek and
pull her under. Soon after this event, the creek was
polluted, and strange stick figures were found
floating by its banks.
Elly Kedward
In 1785, she was an elderly woman who was prosecuted
under charges of witchcraft by the townspeople of
Blair. She was an irish woman who was knowledgable in
herbal medicines and some historians theorize she had
detected a disease among the children and was merely
performing bloodletting, which was a medical practice
at the time that was not largely known or well
received by some. Kedward was sentenced to death and
banished to the Black Forest Woods in the thick of
winter. Some reports say she was tied to a tree or
cart out there. She was never seen again and was
believed to be dead. Within the following year, all of
her accusers and half the town’s children vanished.
Fearing the witch placed a curse on them, the
townspeople vacated Blair.
Robin Weaver
In the late 1800s, this young girl disappeared, and a
search party was sent out to look for her. She claims
a woman whose feet didn’t touch the ground led her
into the woods and into a house and she was left in
the basement. The woman told the girl not to be
afraid. She would return soon with another child.
Robin Weaver was left alone there a long time and in
fear she escaped and made her way back home. When she
returned without the first search party, a second
search party went out to find them. The first search
party was found dead and mutilated and tied to Coffin
Rock, near Tappy East Creek. Weaver grew up a quiet
eccentric woman who lived on Chilton Highway, on the
outskirts of Burkittsville in the same house her
parents raised her up in. Once, during World War Two,
some men were talking outside the general store as
Robin Weaver walked by, now an elderly woman. They
were thinking who the US should send over to finish
off the Nazis. Someone mentioned Rustin Parr. Another
man said “Rustin Parr wouldn’t do no killin’ without
those voices to guide him.” And Weaver said as she
walked by, “Yeah, Jesus. Send the voices. I know those
voices. Send them the voices.”
Rustin Parr
In 1941, he murdered seven children in cold blood and
terrorized an eighth child. He carved markings on
their bodies and removed internal organs to bury in
the woods. Then he went into town and announced that
he was finished. When the townspeople found out what
he did, he was tried and convicted of homicide and
sentenced to death by hanging. In press interviews
prior to his death, Parr admitted repeatedly to the
killings, saying the voices told him to do it. He
showed no remorse but also accepted his fate and
punishment with little emotion or concern. He only
admitted it was the Blair Witch after someone prompted
him. He may not have known who or what it was that
drove him to such murders. Parr was an only child of
parents who were only children. His grandmother was
related to the Blair family bloodline. Parr had been a
reclusive hermit for several years prior to this
activity, living in an old house in the Black Hills
Forest.
Father Dominick Cazale
The priest who heard Parr’s confession. He gave up the
priesthood in 1949, married, and became a teacher.
Cazale joined the Peace Corps, paricipated in the
Civil Rights movement, and was with Chavez in
California. Last known whereabouts: retired to
Florida.
Professor Peter Walling
Hampshire College Linguistics Professor who deduced
that the writing on Parr’s walls were a combination of
ancient Hebrew and Futhark runes.
Checkmark Laboratories
Independent Testing Lab and Consulting Firm in
Washington DC. In January 18th 1996, Buchanan sent
samples of evidence there for ‘chemical analysis.’ In
February, Checkmark had concluded that the soil near
where the footage was found contained an unusually
high level of nitrogen compounds, minute traces of
opiates, uncommon percentages of decomposed
vegetation, animal material, significant amounts of
ash, and contrary to the geographic area, found this soil
to be humus loam instead of clay loam as should be
expected for the area. Buchanan utilized the services
of Checkmark from time to time in his investigations,
and found them to be dependable and reputable.
Black Hills Forest
Located on the outskirts of Burkittsville, just off
Black Hills Road and about fifteen minutes from Route
67, these are the woods in which Elly Kedward was
banished, in which Elizabeth Richardson lived in 1824,
where Rustin Parr lived in a condemned house in the
1940s, and where Heather, Josh and Mike disappeared in
1994. Notable landmarks include Tappy East Creek,
Coffin Rock, Rokone Lot, a stone cemetary, and the
spirit stick glen.
Rokone Lot
Rustin Parr’s house and the place where the footage
was found. It’s also known as the Blair Witch house.
It was burned down in 1941, but by 1996 it was rebuilt
again.
Montgomery College
The nearby college in Rockville Maryland, where
Heather and Joshua went to filmmaking class, and where
a year after their disappearance, students who
discovered the video footage were from.
