Is it possible to telnet over http protocol? My network blocks direct IP connections.

I'm afraid not. Some of the talkers, Surfers for example, provide java connections to the talker on their website (http://surfers.org/) but it's impossible to write a generic one due to java's Applet class having a security restriction that prevents it from making connections outside of the server it was downloaded from.

..and more to the point, even if you use a java applet to connect,
that applet still needs to make a telnet-style connection to
the talker to work, so if you have a firewall and no socks
proxy, you're stuck I'm afraid.

Snowplains provides a web interface, which you can access from www.snowplains.org
You need to be a resident first though, as you cant connect via the web interface without residency.

talker connection over HTTP, no port used other than 80, works a treat most of the time - except when it crashes
