A Conversation for Tea

Milk and Tea

The actual reason for putting the milk in first is that historically, when tea was served in bone china cups, putting boiling tea into said cup was a sure fire way of cracking the cup. If you put the milk in first, the tea is cooled slightly by the milk before it can wreak its havoc. Nothing to do with scalding the milk at all.

From this practical methodology, it became a social imperitive to put the milk in first (after all, if you were the sort who did it the other way, then you were the sort who had *cheap* china). And it is still thus.
