Alfred was a pretty good scholar, seemingly and collected scrolls. His scribes took down quite a lot of stuff in ENGLISH I think "Othere's Voyages" which starts "Othere taelde his hlaforde Aelfred kuning that he of ealle menne tha northmost bude" (sorry no diacritics) is the first bit of English prose. All the words still exist ,except bude as the past tense of bide.

Bude with the loss of the word and I'm sure we'll get by.

If he hadn't won the battle of Ethandune, the language we're all using would probably have been considerably different with Danish rather than Anglo-Saxon underpinnings. Then I'd never get the crossword finished.
