We don't do this very often, but had a very successful evening (4 couples, one with baby) last time we did, by everyone providing a course. The hosts provided wine and starters, I took the dessert, etc.
It was on an Italian theme as it was a reunion after a trip to Italy.
We had antipasti, then a delicious salad with walnuts and a type of salad you only seem to be able to get in Germany, Saltimbocca, pasta, and I took a Walnut parfait and tiramisu for pudding. Used up lashings of cream - and it all got eaten!
We had wonderful conversation and didn't really need music.
Try not to put too much work into the food side of the business, and a common topic of conversation is always a very good idea.
