UCAS tariff
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
The UCAS points system, called the tariff, was introduced in 2001, replacing an old, simpler system where an A at A Level was equal to 10 points, a B was equal to 8 points etc.
The new system has a much larger scale, and therefor is able to assign point values to more types of qualification, including Key Skills. The highest possible point value for a single qualification is a VCE Double Award with grades of AA, which has a value of 240 points. The points are found using a large an complicated table which contains every type of compatible qualification.
To illustrate how the new system works, here is an example of a set of grades, and thier corresponding point values.
A Level Chemistry grade B | 100 points |
A Level Biology grade A | 120 points |
A Level Physics Grade C | 80 points |
A/S Level Mathematics Grade C | 40 points |
Key Skills (Communication) Level 2 | 10 points |
Key Skills (IT) Level 3 | 20 points |
Key Skills (Application of number) Level 4 | 30 points |
Total: | 400 points |
Full details of the points system can be found at the UCAS website.
