The international school, Yaounde, Cameroon
Created | Updated Jun 23, 2005
The International School of Yaounde1 is one of the foremost English speaking schools in Yaounde2 and the most likely school for expatriate students there. The school follows the standard US curriculum and takes boys and girls from Kindergarten age to 12th grade. (Ages 3 to 18).
Campus and facilities
The school shares its site with the "American Club", a members only club with restaurant, swimming pool, tennis courts and a basketball court. All of these facilities except the tennis courts are used by the school during the day without additional fees. There is also a full size football3 pitch and tetherball which is exclusively for the use of the students.
The school buildings contain 16 classrooms, a library and a computer room.
Students
According to the 1999 figures, the majority of the students (40%) are US citizens, whilst 8% are Cameroonian and the remaining 52% are a mix of 21 other nationalities. This is about the same as when I was a student there so it seems to be fairly stable. This is as much to do with the US$9000 annual fee as anything else, as there is no minimum entrance criteria other than the fact that classes are taught in English.
Misc.
The school flies the American flag in its yard, as it is overseen by the US State Department. The school symbol is an African grey parrot, though it is unlikely that they ever possesed a real one. The school was founded in 1964 and has been running ever since, barring short periods closed during the coup d'etat.
