Driver's Liscence

Post 1

Lemon Blossom (aka Athena Albatross)

I finally got my driver's liscence yesterday. It was my second attempt at the road test--the first time the instructor failed me half-way through and said she thought I needed psychological medication before I ought to drive--I'm not sure why. This time I managed to pass it; I only lost half the number of points you have to lose to fail.

It's a good thing I passed because school starts in a week (one year left till university) and I have an internship at the local NASA base--I need to be able to drive there. Also, I'm taking math class zero-period (7:15 AM), so I can't ride the schoolbus in the morning and it would be inconvienient for either of my parents to drive me. At least I don't need to worry about getting a liscence anymore. Now I just need to worry about driving.

Gosh, I don't think it was the examiner's business to tell you to your face that you need psychological medicine! smiley - yikes

What did you say to her?

Well done for succeeding the second time around smiley - bubbly for your license. Have you got your own car now?

I have to go and get my NY driving license at some point this year or next.

No, I don't have my own car.

Yes, you're probably right to be glad to live across the ocean.

Driving terrifies me a bit too much for me to enjoy it--people drive too agressively--crossing the double yellow line median to pass me, passing on the right (the left is the passing lane in the US), passing on the shoulder, making it impossible to change lanes by speeding up when you signal a lane change, ect...

The tester the first time was a her. I didn't say anything after she told me I was crazy--beforehand all I did was complaign that even though, in theory, you're supposed to be able to retake the test the next day, the MVA has such a backlog you can't get an appointment for two weeks or so. I don't think that shows me to be crazy.

Don't complain, over here that two weeks is a few months.

Although having said that my American ex-physics teacher (I'm not in school anymore and he's getting kicked out for not having British qualifications) tells me that people drive comparatively carelessly in America. Having said that, I was just in China and it was like watching a game of Crazy Taxi or Midtown Madness etc. However in China they do have the wonderful innovation of having a countdown above the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.

Ha! You should try Spain if you want to see rather imaginitive driving. Makes being a pedestrian quite an adventure most of the time. I shouldn't think that count-down thing would work so well here, especially when most drivers consider the yellow light means 'Hurry up!'. Also, I wonder how drivers here manage to change gears when they seem to be constantly driving with one hand on the horn. So, both noisy and capricious. Noggin is here on holiday right now and has the extra added challenge of remembering not to look in the wrong direction for oncoming traffic when attempting to cross the street.

I've only driven a few times in Spain and I must say I'd rather take my chances walking (or running out of the way) than trying to second guess the drivers here in a car.

They do have those countdown pedestrian lights in a few places in the US--downtown DC, for example.

Change gears? I'd assume most of them are using automatic transmissions.
