"Anyone who can handle a needle convincingly can make us see a thread which is not there."
E.H.GOMBRICH.
My mind has been conjuring with this for a week. Thought for the day?
Come to h2g2 to needle someone! Hope no one makes a thread of this. I might stick the needle in myself.

That's quite alright, abbi just remember the words of a prophet!

Hypatia Posted Jun 20, 2004
No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. Luke 6: 43-45
Whatsoever a person commits, whether it be virtuous or sinfuldeeds, none of these is of little import; all bear some kind of fruit. Udanavarga 9.8

abbi, I saw the first quote in a daily newspaper and played with the words, obviously. So, it was meant to be amusing although with a food for thought, too.
Hypatia, you made me nervous with your double-emphasis quote!! I know that was not deliberate, but, (paranoia) after my fooling on, I felt like a naughty schoolboy.
By all means, let's make it a serious thread, whenever a quote crops up. You get them every day, mailbox, Hypatia as I understand it.
'Spose funny one's would help too, "laughter being the best medicine."

As a wave,
Seething and foaming,
Is only water
So all creation,
Streaming out of the Self,
Is only the Self.
Consider a piece of cloth.
It is only threads!
So all creation,
When you look closely,
Is only the Self.

One avoids vain talk, and abstains from it. One speaks at the right time, in accordance with facts, speaks what is useful, speaks of the law and the discipline; one’s speech is like a treasure, uttered at the right moment, accompanied by arguments, moderate and full of sense. This is called Right Speech.
-Adapted from the Aguttara Nikaya, translated by Nyanatiloka

I wonder how many politicians consider their speech to be right speech?
There are so many lies and half-truths pushed out to a receptive media that certainly ain't treasure. George Orwell had them all taped.
Of course we all know that, at the right time, silence is golden.
A thought for today - If you are too open minded your brains fall out!

Then we don't have to worry about the politicians.
My theory is that it is impossible for a truthful, honest person to be elected to high office. The last major party candidate in the US who tried to tell the truth was Walter Mondale, and looked what happened to him!
I will admit to being completely cynical when it comes to politicians. Even the local ones are so full of themselves and so arrogant that it turns your stomach to be in the same room with them. But that is the kind of person who is attracted to politics in the first place. We have a good mayor here - a really decent man - but our city council sure has some jerks.

Our Labour politicians have so completely misled the public so many times that they have totally destroyed any faith we ever had in them.
But you cannot sack them can you?
Like you Hypatia I worked for Local Government most of my working life and completely share you views on Councillors in general.
The last job I would ever want would be your President or our Prime Minister. Join me in a

Our politicians can prove most anything with statistics hence the thought for today
There are lies, dammned lies and statistics.
Or the one I prefer - Statistics is like a bikini, what it reveals is significant, but what it conceals is vital.

Hi Ed,
Pleased to meet you too.
I'm fine thanks - wondering why we have gone two days and no thoughts for them. Time a wasting eh?

Nice one, Jazz, you make them flow.
Plenty of thoughts when I am working at the garden, but they turn into an essay by evening!
Saw this one recently and liked it.
