I just Kyaked through the Oracle!
The Fish Started conversation Jun 11, 2000
If your from Reading you'll know what the Oracle is, if not...
Then it's this big shopping center with the river Kennet going through it.
and today me and some friends went on a kyacking trip down the kennet from theale to the Thames... about 7-8 miles. ("kyacking" is another ord for Canoeing)
The Best bit though was when we got to the Oracle Shopping centre and went straight through the middle of it! There was this band playing by the water, but we resisted the temptation to get them wet...
I've probably gotten abit sunburned aswell, cos it was a scorching day today. But I had fun none the less!

Did you manage to get any wierd responses from the shoppers?
When doing things like that, the reponse of the onlookers often makes it even more fun

Yes!
We got quite alot of "looks" from everyone. And it definitely made it a lot more fun. I don't really ever get embarassed, which makes doing something like that more fun.

I've just been in the Oracle! And we had a drink by the Riverside. I didn't see anyone kyack through though.
I saw someone manage to negotiate the bends in a narrowboat, which I thought was quite a good feat! Actually, I probably gave them a "look"... Oops!

Well I guess you wouldn't have done, cos' I did it yesterday. When this band was plaaying...
Narrow boats are actually really easy to control. But I'm sure they didn't mind...

That'll teach me not to read the times or dates of these posts!!!
I've never been on a narrow boat - though I'd like to!

They're great fun... But you have to enjoy doing nothing all day and just relaxing... Which isn't hard!

Insane Endeavour Posted Jun 12, 2000
Ooh, I find that doing nothing really taxing, really too much like hard work!
Or not...
It sounds very good!

Hmm, *mildly (un)convinced)* Yes...
You could always try it sometime... Or if relaxation isn't your thing, go climbing... Which is relaxing for the mind, but not the body

Been there, done that!
Well, maybe not climbing, but walking in mountains anyway - until last year I went to Switzerland every year for 11 years, and I've walked since I was 5, but there you go!
Not too many mountains to climb around here though... could be a problem.

Hmm, well nothing you could really call mountains, but there are some good hills! You don't seem too enthusiastic about walking though, or am I wrong? I haven't been to Switzerland yet... I will in September, Cos' I'm going on a "round Europe trip" with 2 friends and my sister.
I definitely prefer climbing though, but walking is good...
I've done quite a lot of Snowdonia with my Dad and visited the Lake District and Dartmoor... Still haven't been upto Ben Nevis though... But one day when I get some time
You should try it sometime, there's nothing quite like absailing a 200ft wall in about 10seconds... (otherwise known as "controled falling")

I suppose I don't sound amazingly enthusiastic about walking. But I am! Truth is, the main association I have about walking in Switzerland is struggling and puffing my way up 45 degree angles in either very hot temperatures or very cold ones, and being completely out of breath and not being able to easily catch it at 2000-3000m + altitude. But I love Switzerland, and not being able to go last year or this I really miss it , and I have a feeling I'll be going on my own when I'm older.
My Dad's family is orginally from the Yorkshire Dales, and I lvoe walking up there when we visit family!
I'd like to try absailing, but I haven't as of yet - maybe one day!

Well if I go absailing in the near future, your quite welcome to tag along
How come you didn't go to switzerland last/this year?

Because of a variety of reasons, my Mum couldn't get the time off because she changed jobs, and I had commitments over the holidays already, so we couldn't make it.
It was a pity, and I really missed it last year.

Do any of your friends like walking or is it just a family thing...?
How have you found the heat over the weekend..? I've been trying to avoid it, cos otherwise I melt! I'm not really a hot person... I don't mind warm, it's just Hot that I object... I'm sure I'd be quite happy up north where it's colder...

Insane Endeavour Posted Jun 20, 2000
I think it's just a family thing, my friends hate the idea!
I love the heat, but then I can stand the freezing cold too! Which probably originates from my northern roots. I also want to live up north, but not because I hate the heat.

I reckon I'll either end up living in Reading, up a mountain in north wales, or on the Isle of White, where Bluebottle's from... It's very nice down there and house prices are cheap... Also if I could get a job at Westland fixing helicopter avionics, then that'd be nice... Otherwise there's not many jobs on the island...
How come you'd like to live up North then? and where abouts?

Insane Endeavour Posted Jun 22, 2000
I'm not too sure. I may be going to Huddersfield Univercity, and my Dad's family come from that direction (Wakefield) so maybe there. I would also like to live in Scotland, where my Mum's family come from! I'm just a Northerner really!

I've never been upto Huddersfield... What would you study there?
So are you half Scotish? Or a quater...
I've got a half Scotish friend who's going to Aberdeen in October to study philosophy... but then I'd say he's mad, so I doubt he's a very good representation of a half Scot...

Insane Endeavour Posted Jun 26, 2000
I'm just over a third Scottish!
I think I'd study Architecture or perhaps Graphic Design. Architecture is my aim, but I may chicken out of 7 years and stick to the more normal 4 for Graphic design!
And I don't know if you could consider me a good representation of a third-Scottish person!
