Tiggy was put to sleep at about 9:45 pm tonight. It came back. He was in pain. Wasn't fair to keep him like he was : when the medication and the special diet weren't working, and it was returning every 3 months or so.
I am sad.

Still doesn't feel real, y'know? I keep crying, I feel sad, but it doesn't feel like it's actually happened...

That's OK, Saturnine. It's quite normal to feel surreal about it. Grief tends to have a number of stages.
Denial - the one you're in now even though you know logically that it's true
Anger - the one someone I know seems stuck in although I wouldn't expect this to happen with you
Acceptance - some sort of resolution of the former stages
Reminiscence - looking back without much taint of the former stages
Depending on circumstances the denial stage can be combined with shock but at least you knew it was going to happen.

I remember when I had to have my first 
put to sleep. He was old, it was expected. It was still horrible, and I remember it like it was yesterday, although it was 19 years ago. Then I think of the years of fun we had together, all the years when he was my best friend - far outweighing one awful day. The pain does go away, leaving behind it just an echo of sadness when you think about it.

sorry to hear about your loss. As a fellow lover I know how devastated I was when Tabitca was poisoned..hence my user id. You did the right thing ..I hope it gets easier soon.
