I've been stewing my brain about infinity for a while now and I found a posting called 'Parallel Universes - the fifth dimension' really interesting. Sorry, no link, computer illiterate here.

If an infinite number of parallel dimensions exist, then that means that literally anything that is possible is actually happening in an infinite number of them! (I figure that infinite doesn't mean ALL, but a fraction of infinity is still infinite, as infinity isn't an actual number)

So, if every thing that is possible to happen is actually happening in an infinite number of universes, there are infinite universes where H2G2 is actually a reality.

It's like the infinite monkeys writing Shakespeare thing. If there are an infinite number of humans (and any other life forms), then things that are written may be fiction to one dimension, but because there is no end of universes than logically there must be one or more dimensions where it's fact, yes?

So, I figure that things that are fictions on this world are actually realities on some dimension somewhere. I'm probably just insane.

Feel free to gibber, or else just hurl abuse, I don't mind.

Anyway, even if it's a load of bulls**t it's a nice idea. Just imagine your perfect world, and believe that it exists somewhere. Now all we need to do is figure out how to get there!

I suddenly feel in need of a stiff drink!smiley - stiffdrink

Yes, Yes, Yes! That parallel universe stuff is pretty amazing to think about. Now here is one aspect that gave me the creeps just as I was reading your post here: You may be aware that there is this theory that anytime you have a choice between two alternatives and decide for one of them, you actually "create" another universe in which you go for the other choice. So if your decisions create new worlds, it might not be so far off to think that your thoughts alone are enough to create a new universe in which those thoughts are real. Any nightmare you ever had, any perverted thougth about killing your neighbors who annoy the hell out of you, may all actually come true in some universe right at the moment you have those thoughts...

To think of all the terrible worlds Stephen King thus called into existence.

Have you read the Dark Tower series?

There would be an infinite no. of bad worlds, but also good ones, too. Pity we live in such a boring 'normal' one.

I want to figure out how to get to some of these worlds!!smiley - biggrin

No, haven't read Dark Tower... But I have read His Dark Materials (yet another fantasy trilogy smiley - winkeye), and there is a lot about parallel universes in that. Plus, it tells you how to get there. Apparently, there is a knife that can cut through to those other worlds. Pity it had to be destroyed at the end...

But who knows, maybe our world is not that boring, after all. Or rather, it is only so boring because we are used to it. Those parallel worlds that differ so greatly from ours are probably as boring to their inhabitants.

Now, that sounded bleak. So instead of boring, maybe "governed by predictable rules" would be a better term to describe it.

I had this theory when I was a kid, and since then I've found out that someone else had the same theory, that time is an illusion, what actually happens is our consciousness passes through millions of stationary universes a second, and each one is slightly ahead of the one before, so it feels like time is moving forward. I figured that deja vu was when your consciousness skips back to a previous universe for a split second.

It made some sort of sense at the time.

It means that time travel is technically possible, as the past is more like a parallel universe.

Not sure how that fits in with my current theory, and I think I like my new one bettersmiley - biggrin

Hi friend, I saw your name on the assassin guild sign-up and just wanted to extend a welcome, when holy! Someone mentioned the Dark Tower. I've read every one of King's books up to Song of Susahnna and a portion of that too, before I was fed up, no offense but I kept hoping it would just better... I was so frustrated by the Wastelands and the Glass Tower. The new ones I borrowed From a Buick 8 and The Dark Tower but I loathed the ending so I will not be buying any more of his stories, I do not think [though his novella the things they left behind in a collection Trandigressions was pretty good about the world trade center and the hijacking on september 11]smiley - biggrin His earlier one were brilliant I liked Needful Things [which I am re-reading at the moment], Insonmia, first part of Hearts of Atlantis, and of course the Stand.

Okay, now that I vented. You have a fascinating idea. Ever heard of Michael Crichton [yes, wrote Jurassic Park and Airframe] Timeline? Now that was a great book, what with the quantum theory et cetera. smiley - laugh

Yes, I watched Apocalypse Now so I'm slightly gloomy.

Yeah I love Timeline, it's the only book of his I've read.

I was disappointed with the last few books in the Dark Tower series but I loved the first 4. They were written ages ago though, and the last ones were written in the last 5 years or so, and his earlier books are much better than his newer ones, I wouldn't bother reading any new ones now.

"Glass Tower"?? Mine's called Wizard and Glass smiley - erm

Have you read the drawing of the three? That was my favourite

The end of the Dark Tower was pretty crap. Oh well, at least he didn't die before he could finish it. That sounded pretty smiley - devil didn't it?smiley - biggrin

Thanks for the welcome to the assassins guild, it looks pretty good, but I'm not sure what to do now.

I have to go to work nowsmiley - sadface

Egads, smiley - blush so Wizards and Glass it was. It's... been awhile.

Yea, actually I liked Drawing of the Three because Eddie was cool and Jake came back. I adored the thought of the riddle contest but loathed the ending of the fourth one. The illustrations were all pretty scary.

Timeline was awesome, but may I suggest Prey or Netframe (sorry once more)?

Speaking of books, I don't suppose you like Robin Hobb Farseer, Liveship or Tawny Man series? *hopeful*

Thankee sai! Ah, yes, would you like some smiley - tea to wet your throat?

"Robin Hobb Farseer, Liveship or Tawny Man series"
Haven't read any of them, except Robin Hobb, I cry your pardon.

My favourite books are the Hawk and Fisher series and the Blue Moon books by Simon R. Green, and the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling

They're REALLY good

The Tawny Man series sounds familiar, who writes it?

smiley - tea sounds good, I'll bring the smiley - cheesecake

Heh, I feel like an idiot, I just realised that the books you wrote were all Robin Hobb, so in an answer that may make more sense, yes I have read some of Robin Hobb but not for years and I can't really remember any.smiley - blush
