My adopted aunt is dying.

I am sad.
Mary was diagnosed with liver cancer a while ago. Treatments have failed, and now she is at home with Hospice care. To die.
My grandmother and Marys mother have been penpals since the 1930's. Mom took grandma over to see Mabel in 1990's, and made friends with Mary - they are like sisters!
When Dear Husband held a post doc in USA, Mary was our support and extra family. Her children are like my cousins.
And now she is dying.
I try to remember the good person she is, but her family is in pain too, and there is so little I can do.

Death is the one certainty in this universe. And is something I have what could be called a 'Love/Hate relationship' with. What I remind myself of when it comes to losing someone with a condition that cause them suffering is the freedom that death will give them. Wether it be mental or physical or both and wether or not you believe there is anything beyond death it is freedom, and, we the living should take some comfort in that. celebrate the good life they lead, the memories they gave etc...

Thanks, Stealth.
I will remember her by the good times and the laughs we shared, and I do believe she will accept the peace that death will bring. I am not sure about the afterlife, but she and her family are catholics, and I think they have faith for real.
I sent flowers, I hope she gets them before she goes. I am debating whether to ask mom to go with me, perhaps to see her, perhaps for the funeral. I don't know.
I have an inkling about how you feel about death, but I hope you are not as eager to find it as you were. I find life to curious to skip. .
