Stockholm, in the dark and off-line...

Well, I am in Stockholm now; and although it isn't too cold, it sure is dark! I have had NO TIME to get on line in the last month. I am missing H2G2 dreadfully.

Anyone who wants to get in touch can email me direct at: [email protected]

How long's it going to be before the sun comes up there then?

The sun'll come out when it stops raining.

Stockholm is on the same latitude as the Shetlands, so it is light from about 9.00am to about 2.00pm just now. But it is very dark when it is dark. Stockholm is built on islands, so there is a lot of water (ie huge areas where there are no streetlamps); plus there is less light pollution because of the type of lights used, so the sky is very dark.

I find that it is like being permanently jetlagged; I expect to be alowed to go home at 2.30 pm!

Was that too much detail?

Too much detail? Nope, not at all smiley - smiley Made an interesting read. Have you ventured any further north than Stockholm yet? (more's to the point, going by what you wrote, do you want to? I guess not...) I have to admit to never having travelled far enough to get jetlag, so I'll just have to imagine, but I understand what you mean - I felt far more inclined to stay at work until late during the summer than I do now, though then again you could put part of that down to it no-longer being a new job.

Oh I definitely want to go further north. Partly for the experience, partly because the further north you are the more chance you get to see the Northern Lights. Still not that likely though.

I have the chance to go to the Ice Hotel with some colleagues in Feb, so we will be going north then. (I was asked whether I minded sharing with one of the guys - I should have said "do I get to choose which one?" Missed my chance there!)

Plus I have a Swedish friend with family up North, and there is a chance I could visit them. That would be great.

The Ice Hotel? Mmm. You're making me jealous smiley - smiley About the architecture, that is, not the company... Though I'd agree - in such unfortunate circumstances, I think you're allowed to be choosy about the details smiley - smiley Have to say from the images I've seen of it it's an amazing places - being in it must be rather ephemeral (no dictionary to hand - think that means what I want it to!). A bit like being in a very cold dream.

If you get the chance, go and have a look at some of Sverre Fehn's buildings, too. I don't know what you'd make of them (come to think of it I don't know if you'd be remotely interested, but he's worth mentioning anyway). They're brilliant, in quite an understated way. He's a nack of making buildings that feel very human in some amazingly harsh and awe inspiring landscape.

Like being in a very cold dream.... Now I am REALLY looking forard to it.

How would I identify Sverre Fehn's buildings, btw? I am always up for recommendations of any sort. They let chance into your life.

I loved your piece about "plarsters". That is definitely how we say it in Gloucestershire, (where I come from). It made me laugh a lot.

smiley - smiley Thanks. Bit of stress relief, that journal entry, though the keyboard took a bit of cleaning after...

I take it you've not seen any pictures of the Ice Hotel, then. I'll have a root around for some pictures of Fehn's buildings - I'll stick them on my space. It could do with freshening up smiley - smiley though I never seem to get round to it.

Those photos are on my space if you're interested. They're not exactly brilliant - oddly they're not photos of the best bits, but I'm afraid I don't have a scanner so they're ones filtched from other websites.
