Moving House

Post 1

Finally, after 9 (almost 10) years, I'm moving house. Something bigger, something off the basement, something quiter, something closer to the U-Bahn smiley - smiley. Something more expensive, too smiley - sadface

My current habitat was intended as a preliminary housing from the beginning, but there you see what being a procrastinator is all about smiley - whistlesmiley - winkeye

All that is left here for the moment is a table, a chair and the computer. This is necessary because the telephone&DSL line will be switched over sometime next week. What would I do without?

Credits for triggering the move and finding the new flat go out to h2g2 in general, and to Hell (U171578) in particular smiley - stiffdrink. He's living right next door (from the new flat, that is), which makes h2g2 Munich Mini Meets so much easier smiley - biggrin

Good luck with your choice Bossel!

As I am in the process of moving house myself, I know a bit what you are feeling.

A Munich (mini?) Meet? Who knows? Or Jenever can tell, ass the Dutch saysmiley - biggrin

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

It sounds like it may be a bit late for this, but anyway: A575606

It's never too late for good advice Goshosmiley - ok.

I think we will do the packing and unpacking ourselves, but leave the hoisting, loading the big lorry and so on to professional movers.

Marjin, the MMMs were set up as a loose sequence of unofficial events between two certain h2g2 researchers. But of course, we could make official unofficial ones. Had I been planning more carefully, the old flat would have made a superb location for that. Now, I guess, it's a little too late for people to arrange anything within the rest of April.

Gosho, that's useful advice although I'm already through the easier parts. I stopped buying any food apart from fruit and veggies as soon as I know I was going to move, to get the fridge and cupboards as empty as possible, packed the boxes as they ought to be packed (heavy items at the bottom, clothes on top). The boxes were all the same size and the bottoms of course carefully taped close. The sofa went in and out the old flat in one piece, but it had to go through the window because of a tight corner in the entry. Well, this method wouldn't work with the new flat which is one floor up. Plus, with a weight of ~100kg and a cross-section of 1m x 1m, it had to go through an 80cm door smiley - yikes. I had an ebay page ready... But then it turned out that the piece could easily be split into three parts and bingo! in it went smiley - biggrin

The TV obviously didn't like it all. At the new place, it worked for a couple of hours, then started going pale, going all red, going all green, then went *plop* smiley - sadface

The more difficult part is still in progress: I've got the ambitions to assemble the kitchen by myself (it's mine, and it had to move, too). Of course, nothing fits into places like it did in the old place, so I've got to cut new holes for the kitchen sink and the heater plates into a newly cut working surface, the plumbing needs to be done from scratch etc, etc.

Oh, and I've got some good advice too: If you have to disassemble something then carefully mark all corners, holes and screws so that you'll later know which part goes where. All fittings, keys and screws belonging to an item should be glued to the inside of the item itself.
Then, make sure that you can actually turn the main water supply off, and I mean 'off'! It's no fun if you remove the kitchen tap and water still runs out of the wall smiley - yikes

smiley - cheers

Luckily, it was only the bathroom that got filled with ~1/2 cm of water. I needed to wipe it with a wet cloth anyway smiley - biggrin

Birthday is still 14 days away, so don't worry!

Um, err, house-warming party? I'm afraid this will have to wait until all the boxes are emptied etc, etc (or could it be that house-warming parties are held between boxes and kitchen furniture? I don't know). But anyway... we could arange for a Munich Meet sometime soon. Hell already suggested that, and the idea sounds good to me smiley - cheers

Dr Hell

What was that again?

Another idea... which would circumvent the problems of 'renting' a pub, would be to organize something at the Isar banks (Flaucher or so), along with a grill (have) and some crates of beverage (easy). Also we would be pretty flexible as to arriving time and leaving (if the weather is REALLY good, some folks might even want to bring their sleeping bags smiley - winkeye The rest is just finding appropriate ho(s)tels.

BTW. We're just back from Hannover. Kids are smiley - ill. So no MMM today. But in the next few days smiley - winkeye

Later...

HELL

Thanks ZSF!

I think I'm now through the worst parts of it. The kitchen is up and running, now that the sink is connected and the dish-washer had its maiden flight, so to speak. Thanks to the internet, most of those that are after my money (insurances, bank, ADAC etc) know my new address. And, last but not least, the lathe has got a very nice working bench (which kept me busy for a whole day).

Books and curtains are still in the boxes, a few wooden décor items need to be nailed somewhere and empty boxes need to be carried somewhere. But this has to wait until I've made my Scout's picks. After all, there *are* priorities smiley - winkeye

Er, what's an IOW, please?

Hell, Flaucher would be a nice place smiley - ok Plus, the Thalkirchen camping ground isn't far away!

smiley - cheers

Yup - just checked it out. It is a beer garden cum open air concert arena cum naturist park?

The zoo???

The Flaucher is just a place... There's a naturist park somewhere there (surrounded by a fence IIRC) and some 'Biergartens'.

When are you comming over TC?

For going to the Flaucher I'd like to suggest early June rather than any time in between. The weather usually is too unreliable for planning any outdoor activities in advance.

ZSF, did you meet any of the (at least) two h2g2 researchers on IOW?
