Farewell Dad 1942-2007
Demon Drawer Started conversation Feb 7, 2007
At 8:20 last night (6 February) my father passed on. At this time I was still flying back home. But I was prompted to look out the window as we were flying over Belfast and looked down and located the Knock By-Pass where the Marie Curie centre he was taken to yesterday is located. The time I looked out was roughly the time he passed on.
He went very swiftly in the end. But he was spared a lot of pain that had come his way in the last 24 hours. On Monday he had walked into the hospital for a check up with the Oncologist he walked into the hospital unaided. When the Doc saw him she said she would have to admit him but there were no beds at the Ulster Hospital but she got him a referral to the wonderful unit at the Marie Curie Centre.
I had a feeling as I looked out that that was it. I had prayed 'Lord if your will heal him. Or if it's your will let him survive long enough for me, his cousin from Derry and his sister from England to get back to him. But if the pain is going to be to much relieve him of it as best you can.'
I guess the latter was the will of God.
I love you Dad. God bless.

I'm so sorry DD.
In the end, I was praying for my Dad's pain to be over, and the last time I saw him alive he looked so peaceful. When their pain is gone, it's not fair to wish them to hang on, you have to be very, very brave and let them go, but I have a great faith that when it's my turn he will come for me and we'll be together again
In the meantime, so many weird things are happening, last night my outside porch light came on (it's not worked in 4 years) and it's still on. Monday morning when I drove Mum to the Hospice where Dad passed away to drop off a cheque, a fox walked in front of my car (Dad fed his neighbourhood fox every night).
My stripy scarf that Dad loved has disappeared, vanished without trace. So has a pair of Mum's gloves.
be brave DD, he's not gone far.

Thank you everyone your thoughts and comments are most kind. I just counldn't sleep so came by here.
His funeral is tomorrow at 10am from the Church and will be as he wished a full Boys' Brigade funeral. From his grave clothes to his final bugle call.

I am sorry to hear of your loss DD, I know what a fine job those Marie Curie nurses do and I'm sure your Dad was very well looked after in his final hours. I hope he has a marvellous funeral and you fill the day with happy thoughts of his life

I know we've had our quite substantial differences in the past, but I note with a fair degree of sympathy that we now have something very profound in common. I lost my father to cancer about two years ago. I expect my father was a rather less adequate one than yours, but he still managed to break my bloody heart at the end of the day.
I'm not religious, so when I try to honour somebody's memory I try to keep alive in me the values that I admired in them. I think if we all did that, the world would gradually get better for everybody.
